11 people dead in Binondo fire

(UPDATES) ELEVEN people were killed in a fire that hit a building along Carvajal Street in Manila's Binondo district on Friday.

Speaking on national radio, village official Nelson Ty of Barangay 289, Zone 27 confirmed the fatalities, including the wife of the building's owner.

"Among the fatalities was the owner's wife, who was trapped on the third floor of the building," Ty said in Filipino.

Ty said that the victim may have been trying to retrieve items from the blaze, but was trapped inside.

In a separate interview, a spokesman for the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – National Capital Region told reporters that the cause of the fire is under investigation, adding that estimated damage to property was at P100,000.

All the 11 fatalities were trapped in the burning building, the BFP officer said, adding that six bodies were found in the mezzanine, five others (all women) were retrieved on the third floor, and all of the victims were in their beds, as they were probably asleep when the fire broke out at 7:22 a.m.

One person, who experienced difficulty in breathing, was injured in the incident.
