Lapu-Lapu to reward top Palaro athletes

CEBU CITY — Student-athletes from Central Visayas, including Cebuana trackster Asia Paraase, will receive cash incentives for their outstanding performances in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa here.

Asia Paraase, a student from Pajo National High School, secured the first gold medal of the 64th Palarong Pambansa on Thursday after ruling the 3,000-meter run.

In winning, Paraase clocked 10 minutes and 27.36 seconds, surpassing her previous record of 10:50.3 time she recorded when she won silver medal during last year's Palaro in Marikina City.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan acknowledged Paraase's achievement, and announced cash incentives for athletes who bring pride to the city. The mayor at the same time expressed happiness and pride that Lapu-Lapu's first gold medal came from a local athlete.

He emphasized the significance of the Palarong Pambansa as the "Philippines Olympics," where the country's top athletes compete.

The city government will reward all participating student-athletes from Lapu-Lapu City who clinch gold, silver, and bronze medals. The City Sports Commission will recommend the budget allocation for these incentives, which the City Council will approve and pass.

The exact amounts, which will depend on the Sports Commission's proposal to the City Council, are yet to be announced.

Aside from Paraase, other athletes from Lapu-Lapu City who have won medals include Troy Nathaniel Abing, who won gold in arnis individual single weapon event, and Athena Kate Sapio, Jayn Paller, and Amber Joy Notarte, who triumphed in the Synchronized Sword and Dagger Anyo event.

Meanwhile, an ordinance authored by Cebu City Councilor Jerry Guardo will provide further incentives for medal-winning athletes in recognition of their contributions to the city's pride in both national and international competitions like the Palaro.

Also, Mandaue City has announced incentives for winning student-athletes. Medalists will be rewarded with P10,000 for gold, P7,000 for silver, and P5,000 for bronze.
