CARCAR CITY, Cebu — The Land Transportation Office Central Visayas (LTO 7) has trained over a hundred police officers in the province of Cebu to address the increasing accidents on the Trans Central Highway (TCH) in Balamban town.
LTO 7 Director Glen Galario is authorizing police personnel from the Cebu Provincial Police Office to serve as LTO's deputized agents.
"This partnership, initiated by Cebu Provincial Director Police Colonel Percival Zorrilla and Balamban Mayor Ace Stefan Binghay, aims to deputize PNP personnel and local enforcers to reduce traffic-related incidents in TCH," stated RD Galario.
The deputation seminar was held at the E.S. Binghay Memorial Sports Complex in Barangay Sta. Cruz-Sto. Niño, Balamban.
A total of 114 police officers, 10 personnel from the Balamban Traffic Management Office, and two from the Provincial Mobile Force Company participated in the training last May as part of Road Safety Month.
In a letter to Galario, Zorrilla convened a meeting last month with stakeholders, the Philippine National Police Balamban, and involved government agencies to tackle the rising road accidents in TCH.
Zorrilla said the meeting's agenda included discussions on the current traffic situation, identification of specific problem areas, and exploration of strategies to enhance traffic management and safety measures.
To further the collaboration, Galario decided to train some police personnel in the province to assist LTO in enforcing traffic laws in the high-accident area.
However, Galario noted that not all trainees would receive deputation authority immediately.
"We will consult to determine how many we can deputize to ensure proper use of these authorities," he said.
LTO 7's Traffic Adjudication Section, headed by lawyer Froilan Jay Suarez, Regional Training Officer Apollo Machachon, and the Traffic Safety Unit provided the necessary lectures for deputation.
"With the new LTO deputized officers in Balamban, road safety and law enforcement will be enforced. Balamban fully supports LTO 7's mandate," said Binghay as he conveyed his gratitude to LTO 7 for responding quickly to their request to address traffic issues in TCH.
Galario authorized the deputization of 14 patrol officers for the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway, the country's longest bridge.
LTO 7 Operations Division chief Vicente Gador Jr. confirmed that these officers were trained at the LTO Central Office and received their Temporary Operator's Permits.
LTO 7 now has 224 deputized personnel in the region who are authorized to apprehend traffic law violators in the region.
