Carlo J. Caparas dies at 80

MANILA, Philippines — Award-winning director and illustrator Carlo J. Caparas passed away at the age 80.

His daughter Peach confirmed the news late Saturday night in a Facebook post where she paid tribute to her father.

"Sa larangan ng komiks siya ang naghari, naging bahagi ng kultura, naging yaman ng lahi/ Subalit buhay ay sadyang may wakas.../ "Pack up na Direk". Oras na ng uwian./Salamat Direk Carlo J. sa mga dibuho at istorya./ Mga istoryang nabuo sa bawat tipa ng iyong makinilya..." part of Peach's tribute poem "Sa Bawat Tipa ng Makinilya," read.

"Dad, you will forever be loved, cherished, and honored...by all of us," she added.

Peach did not disclose the cause of her father's death but shared that the wake will start Monday, May 27, from 12 p.m. to 12 midnight, at the Golden Haven Memorial Chapels and Crematorium's Conservatorio II, in Villar Sipag, C5 Extension Road, Brgy. Manuyo Dos, Las Piñas.

Carlo Caparas started his career as a comic cartoonist and writer. In the '70s he became more popular when his comics — including "Totoy Bato" (1977), "Bakekang" (1978) and "Ang Panday" (1980) — became blockbuster movie hits. His other works turned to movies and series include "Pieta," and "Elias Paniki."

Caparas made his solo directorial debut in "Ang Babaing Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang" in 1981, starring Vivian Velez.

Among his last projects was the movie "Kamandag ng Droga" which was released in 2017.
