MANILA, Philippines: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday ordered the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and all local government units (LGUs) to grant a "grace period" to electric vehicles such as e-bikes, e-trikes, e-four wheelers using national roads in Metro Manila.
In a statement posted on his social media, the President said they must be given ample time to be informed about the ban.
Speaking in Filipino, Marcos said the coverage of the grace period would be the "non-issuance of tickets, imposition of fines, and the impounding of e-trikes."
He said that if these vehicles would be stopped it would be "to inform the drivers of the roads that they can use and to remind them of the new regulations to ensure their safety and to maintain orderliness on the roads."
On March 11, the MMDA announced the implementation of Regulation 24-022 or the prohibition of e-bikes, e-trikes, tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and "kuliglig" from traversing national roads, circumferential roads, and radial roads in Metro Manila beginning April 15.
The regulation is based on the Department of the Interior and Local Government's (DILG's) Memorandum Circular 202-036 and 2023-195 as well as the Land Transportation Office Administrative Order 2021-039 or the Consolidated Guidelines in the Classification, Registration and Operation of All Types of Electric Vehicle.
