MANILA, Philippines: Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro announced over the weekend the suspension of classes in all levels on Tuesday, April 16, for the city's founding anniversary.
But there will still be work in government and private offices because April 16 is a special working day.
"In celebration of the Founding Anniversary of Marikina City, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10788, I am pleased to announce that April 16, 2024 will be observed as a special working holiday, with no classes in all levels in public and private schools in the entire city of Marikina," he said.
"This anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of our city's illustrious past and the indomitable spirit of its people. Let us unite in celebration of Marikina's rich heritage and dynamic culture, fostering a collective sense of pride in our shared identity that is uniquely taga-Marikina," Teodoro added.
Meanwhile, some 600 cyclists, young and old, participated in the 394th Marikina Day Bike Fest on Sunday, April 14.
Teodoro said the oldest biker was an 89-year-old resident of Barangay Concepcion Dos.
"Based on the registration of participants, the oldest cyclist who joined was Oscar Gomez. There were also some children who participated," he said.
"The turnout was really great. Many people came out, at least 600 bikers participated," he added.
Teodoro said the local government of Marikina is advocating for safe biking in the city.
