Search for 4 fishermen off Southern Leyte continues

SEARCH continues for four Filipino fishermen who went missing on February 29 off San Ricardo in Southern Leyte while on a fishing expedition.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) station in Surigao del Norte said on Wednesday, March 6, that it is coordinating with concerned government agencies and maritime stakeholders.

Two of their companions, identified as Jesmar Besing and Joseph Mapalo, were rescued by the crew of a fishing boat on March 2.

According to the rescued fishermen, they departed the village of Canlanipa in Surigao City at around 5 p.m. on February 28 for a fishing venture off Limasawa Island.

While they were transiting the waters off San Ricardo town in Southern Leyte at around 5:45 a.m. on February 29, they encountered rough waters, which damaged their bow and caused seawater to gradually enter their boat.

The fishermen managed to call their relatives on their mobile phones to inform them about the incident and seek help until they eventually lost network connection.

The rescued fishermen said the six of them swam together until they drifted toward the Bohol Sea, where they were separated due to a strong current.
