THE captivating landscape and hilly terrain of the Laoag City sand dunes shall become the field of battle for adventure seekers and running enthusiasts as the Laoag City Sand Dunes Challenge returns on Saturday, February 24.
Nestled in the heart of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, the sand dunes will provide the perfect track for this unique running competition.
Runners can choose to race in the 5K and 10K categories catering to both male and female entries with a special 5K race designed for young participants. Unlike traditional foot races, the Laoag City Sand Dunes Challenge unfolds across the undulating but menacing topography of the natural sand dunes.
Laoag City Mayor Michael Marcos Keon, a running enthusiast himself, said the Sand Dunes Challenge is one of the highlights of the Pamulinawen Festival.
The city government of Laoag hosted the first Sand Dunes Challenge last year which drew over 300 participants, including global contenders like Kenyan standout Kipchirchir Lel.
This year, the organizers have accommodated 500 participants, including members of the Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Army, Philippine Marines and the Ilocos Norte police force.
Also competing are seasoned runners from Ilocos, Pangasinan, Baguio, Bulacan and Calamba and at least four track and field athletes from the Philippine national team.
Every race finisher will receive a commemorative medal and a stylish event jersey, Keon said.
The male and female 10K champion will receive a cash prize of P15,000 each. The 5K winner, male and female, will get P10,000 each and the top finisher in the 5K race for kids will win P10,000.
As side events for the Laoag City Sand Dunes Challenge, thrill-seekers can try the experience of scaling the sandy hills on a 4x4 or riding the dunes on a sandboard.
In a gesture of generosity and support, Mayor Jose "Bonito" Singson Jr. of Vigan City will stand as the principal sponsor of the event, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and collaboration between the two cities.
In return, Laoag City will assist Vigan City in organizing a race in the future where runners in the sand dunes challenge are also expected to participate.
