Africa public health body declares mpox emergency

Africa’s top public health body has declared a "public health emergency of continental security" due to a significant mpox outbreak spreading from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring countries. The Africa CDC reported over 15,000 cases and 461 deaths this year, a 160% increase from last year. The new Clade Ib variant spreads more easily, particularly among children. Mpox, endemic in Africa since 1970, saw a global surge in 2022, but the WHO ended its emergency status after 10 months.
