Trai's new norms mandate telcos to compensate users for service outages, raise penal amount

Trai introduced new rules requiring telecom operators to compensate subscribers for service outages exceeding 24 hours at the district level. The regulations include a graded penalty system and increased penal amounts for failing to meet quality benchmarks. Operators must offer rent rebates or validity extensions for affected postpaid and prepaid customers. Fixed-line providers will also compensate if faults are unresolved beyond three days. Additionally, broadband service providers must activate 98% of connections within seven days. The new norms will become effective after six months.
