Karl Rossmann, a sixteen-year-old boy, arrives in New York on a ship. Sent to America by his parents due to a scandal involving a servant girl, Karl witnesses a sudden burst of sunshine on the Statue of Liberty. Despite initial hesitation, he prepares to disembark but realizes he has forgotten his umbrella.
