The Assam Cabinet approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024, making government registration mandatory and illegalizing child marriage. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the new law aims to combat Love Jihad and prevent inter-religious land transfer. The Cabinet also plans to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act 1935. Additionally, plans for a Uniform Civil Code were discussed to address marriage age, polygamy, inheritance, and live-in relationships.
