Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the Modi government of endangering national security and youth's future by introducing the Agnipath scheme. He vowed to scrap the Agnipath military recruitment scheme when in power. Ramesh criticised the scheme for reducing armed forces recruitment and claimed it compromised India's negotiating power against China. The scheme, introduced in June 2022, aimed to lower the age profile of the armed forces by recruiting youngsters aged 17-and-half to 21.
