8,360 candidates in fray in 2024 LS polls, highest since 1996

A total of 8,360 candidates are contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the highest since 1996. The number of candidates per constituency has increased from 4.67 in 1952 to 15.39 in 2024, marking a significant rise from previous elections. The first Lok Sabha elections in 1952 had 1,874 candidates, while the 2014 elections saw 8,251 candidates participating.
