No bar on political parties from contesting municipal polls, allocation of symbols not arbitrary: HC

By Economic Times - 7 months ago
The Delhi High Court has ruled that political parties recognized by the State Election Commission (SEC) can contest municipal polls, and the allocation of poll symbols by the SEC is reasonable. The court dismissed a petition seeking to stop using reserved symbols for political parties in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. It stated that there is no constitutional bar on political parties contesting municipal elections and that using symbols helps illiterate voters choose candidates. The SEC's 2022 symbol order, granting recognition to national and state parties, was deemed valid by the court.
