Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Centre for releasing an 'election-inspired' Household Consumption Expenditure Survey, demanding a census with accurate information and a caste survey. He questioned the benefits received by the poorest five per cent of rural India and the discrepancy between poverty figures in different reports.
