Two-time Olympian Ernest John Obiena opened his first pole vault facility at the Marcos Stadium in Laoag City on Saturday.
In a post on his social media platforms, Obiena cited the proverb "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" as his inspiration for this facility.
"This proverb emphasizes the importance of teaching skills and self-sufficiency rather than providing temporary aid. It highlights the value of empowerment through education and guidance, allowing individuals to become INDEPENDENT and capable of SUSTAINING THEMSELVES. This saying has become a universal metaphor for effective teaching and mentorship," Obiena said.
He said this was his first try to help out the next generation of pole vaulters.
"This is my first attempt to teach our young athletes how to 'fish' for medals," according to Obiena.
"I believe in investing in our youth. I believe in the greatness that resides in every Filipino in every corner of the Philippines. Let this be simply the beginning," he added.
He went on to say that the next pole vault facility will be in Tagum, Davao del Norte.
