DTI: Candle, water prices remain stable

By Manila Times - 3 weeks ago

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Friday reported prices of bottled water and candles remain steady amid the observance of Undas or All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day on Nov. 1 and 2, respectively.

"Our monitoring results show a stable trend with no significant changes in the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) for bottled water and candles since January 2024," DTI regional director Rachel Nufable said.

However, the DTI noted that in Iloilo City, there was a price decrease of up to 12 percent for certain bottled water brands. A price reduction of 1.56 percent to 4.34 percent, meanwhile, was observed in candles.

The agency's latest price guide showed bottled water sells between P8 to P75, depending on the size. Prices of candles vary on pieces per pack, from P33 to P177.

Measures are in place to ensure retailers will adhere to the SRP and maintain transparency in pricing, the DTI said, adding that penalties and sanctions can be given to erring sellers. The DTI is likewise activated Local Price Coordinating Councils and established Consumer Welfare Desks, along with implementing additional measures to prevent unfair trade practices.

As the key implementing agency of the Price Act and chairman of the National Price Coordinating Council, the DTI is mandated to ensure price stability and adequate supply of basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs).

Section 10 (5) of the Price Act says implementing agencies may issue suggested reasonable retail prices for any or all BNPCs under their jurisdiction. This information guides producers, manufacturers, traders, retailers and consumers.

In line with the holidays, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reminded the public to be responsible with their waste while visiting the tombs of their departed.

DENR said at a public briefing it is working with local enforcement agencies to monitor the implementation of environmental regulations against harmful substances or nonbiodegradable materials on cemetery grounds.

"We are also providing logistical support to ensure adequate facilities for waste disposal, including designated areas for proper waste disposal," Karren Panopio-Lofranco, DENR chief of legal affairs service, said.
