DITO aims to double broadband subscribers

By Manila Times - 13 hours ago

DITO Telecommunity Corp. (DITO Tel) is aiming to double its home broadband subscribers next through the introduction of affordable unlimited prepaid broadband.

"Our target for this year is to end [with] 150,000 subscribers and then for next year, we really want to double it next year," DITO Chief Revenue Officer Evelyn Jimenez told reporters.

DITO Tel, a subsidiary of listed DITO CME Holdings Corp. and a part of Dennis Uy-led Udenna Corp., currently has over 100,000 home broadband subscribers.

Udenna is a consortium owned by DITO CME and China Telecommunications Corp., a Chinese state-owned enterprise and the parent company of China Telecom.

"We have very high ambition[s], especially with the launch of Redcap Wifi," Jimenez said.

"With DITO Home WOWFi, we want to jolt Filipinos out of their old ways of dealing with their internet [speeds] at home; our goal is to give them a life-changing home Wi-Fi that lets them live big," she added.

5G RedCap is a new 5G standard that only operates on standalone 5G networks, it is said to be "true 5G" and offers high capacity, maximum quality, and lower latency non-standalone 5G networks that rely on existing 4G infrastructure.

"It is the kind of technology that provides all the benefits of 5G, such as low latency, high peak data rate, maximum capacity, [and] without the need for high bandwidth," Huawai Technologies said.

DITO Tel said that is the sole telco operator in the country with a true 5G network to date.

Home WOWFi, it added, will also drive the future for the Internet of Things, or smart home applications, and support the growth of the digital economy.

Shares of DITO Tel's parent firm, DITO CME Holdings, closed up 1.58 percent at P1.71 each on Friday.
