IM Garcia rules chess tournament in Hong Kong

International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of the Philippines topped the HK-DB Monthly International Open Fide-rated chess tournament held on October 4-7, 2024 at Club Siena, Discovery Bay, Hong Kong.

The many time Filipino Chess Olympian scored seven points in seven rounds to dominate the tournament that drew 31 chess masters from host Hong Kong, China, India, Russia, Singapore and the Philippines.

For his feat, the 29-year-old Garcia also pocketed the cash prize equivalent to P70,000.

En route to the championship, Garcia scored victories against Haoyang Wu, Kyle Chen, Yulun Cai, Xuanyu Liu, Fuhan Zhang, Yuxu Zhou and Siddhant Tamhankar.

Garcia, who has a Fide rating of 2389, is currently the head of the Ateneo de Manila University chess program.
