George King open to playing for Gilas

By Manila Times - 4 days ago
MANILA, Philippines — Add George King among the foreign reinforcements who have expressed their desire to play for the Gilas Pilipinas squad. Seeing action for just seven games for Blackwater, the 30-year-old King admitted he enjoyed the atmosphere of the team, the league and the warm reception he had received as an import. In fact, the prolific Blackwater import nearly towed the Bossing to a playoff spot despite coming in as a last-minute replacement for Cameron Clark. The former Colorado closed his first-ever PBA stint by dropping 64 points as Blackwater routed Rain or Shine, 139-118 on Monday night at the end of the double-round eliminations of the PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup. "I would love to play for the national team. I would love to put the blue and gold jersey across no. 94. I would love to do that," King told sportswriters. The high-scoring Blackwater reinforcement said he has known Utah Jazz gunner Jordan Clarkson for quite awhile who he said, "speaks highly of the Philippines." "I see his picture in billboards," King said of the sweet-shooting Clarkson, who reinforced Gilas in last year's FIBA World Cup in Manila. "I would love to mix up with him with the guys here. If they would have me, I would love to do it. It's an opportunity of a lifetime." The 59th overall pick of the Phoenix Suns in 2018 led all imports in scoring this conference after averaging 40.29 points in seven games. The energetic Backwater import also submitted solid per-game averages of 13.14 rebounds and 4.7 assists, while shooting 39.53 percent from four-point zone. At the moment, former San Miguel Beer import Bennie Boatwright is already eyed as the next key piece for Gilas after Senator Sonny Angara recently filed Senate Bill 2646, which seeks to grant citizenship to the 6-foot-10 sweet-shooting forward. At the moment, Justin Brownlee, Ange Kouame and Clarkson are currently among the roster of naturalized players for Gilas.
