By Manila Times - 4 hours ago
MANILA, Philippines — After two straight miseries, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta got back in the winning column after taking down Emilio Aguinaldo (EAC), 73-67, in the NCAA Season 100 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Saturday. The Altas who suffered from back-to-back losses at the hands of Mapua University and College of Saint Benilde ended its two-game dry spell as rookie Mark Gojo Cruz stuffed the statistical sheet with 18 points, six assists, three blocks, and two steals. Christian Pagaran flirted with a double-double performance after churning out 15 markers, nine rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Cedrick Abis showed how lethal he is after a 83.3 percent field goal shooting, scoring five out of six of his attempts to tally 11 points. With the Altas showing better team chemistry inside the court, head coach Olsen-Racela was glad to see how his young team had a bounce-back mentality. "I am very optimistic and the team is learning a lot, we're learning about each other, the teams that can make us stronger. I mentioned it before, this is all about growth. We are beginning to realize how to play with each other. Still, Racela mentioned how his squad needs to work on their defense as the Altas tallied 20 turnovers, while EAC only had 12. With the Generals coming off from a big win over the defending champion San Beda University, Racela mentioned that maybe they "caught the Generals off guard." "They broke their losing streak against San Beda, well from our side we came from a loss against Benilde. So...I told my team to bounce back not with a win but to play with much effort," he said. King Gurtiza led the Generals with 17 points, while Nico Quinal added 16.
