Blazers rout Altas to stay unbeaten

By Manila Times - yesterday
COLLEGE of Saint Benilde schooled the young University of Perpetual Help System Dalta squad after a 78-51 blowout win to take its fourth-straight victory in the NCAA 100 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City on Wednesday. This is Benilde's best start in NCAA under veteran coach Charles Tiu (4-0). Perpetual Help, on the other hand, fell to a 2-2 win-loss card. The Blazers posted a 29-point lead, 69-40, and kept their cushion throughout the end of the clock to remain unscathed early in the season. The green squad scored 32 points in the second quarter alone, courtesy of Sanchez, Ynot and Cometa, drilling the shots, while the Altas only had 19. "We give credit to our guys, you can see that in the first half they already have that energy. Maybe after we pulled all those runs, the Altas had a hard time bouncing back. But I give credit to Perpetual. They are a young team, and to coach Olsen [Racela], he is a great coach, he knows a lot of plays," Tiu said after the game. Justin Sanchez made 13 points and eight rebounds, while Winston Ynot and Gab Cometa added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Benilde outscored Perpetual in bench points after chiming in 51, while the Altas only had 19. For the head coach, having no "star player" yet in their team is something that he takes positively, as their scattered offense resulted in a four-game winning streak. "I take that positively [a team with no star player] because we have more options. Last year, everybody knew Miggy Corteza, Will Gozum, Migz Oczon, this time everybody, any guy can score. We have Justine, Ynot, Allen Liwag, even our point guards can score. I think we have more weapons. It is good for us." Perpetual's Mark Gojo Cruz put up a double-double performance of 11 points and 11 rebounds that all went to waste.
