By Manila Times - 3 days ago
MANILA, Philippines — With Tropical Depression "Gener" starting to weaken, the storm signal over some cities in the National Capital Region has been lifted, the state-run weather agency said on Tuesday. But Signal No. 1 remains up over Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, and Pampanga in Luzon. Forecast to emerge over the coastal waters of Ilocos Sur or La Union anytime in the day, the tropical cyclone will then move generally westward over the West Philippine Sea until Thursday before turning west-northwestward as it heads towards southern China. In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Gener, the seventh storm to hit the country this year, may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Over the next 12 hours, Gener may possibly weaken into a low pressure area as it continues to interact with the rugged terrain of Northern Luzon, Pagasa said. However, as iGener emerges over the coastal waters of Ilocos Sur or La Union, it may reach tropical storm category early Wednesday morning, it added. Moviing westward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), Gener has maximum sustained winds of 45kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55kph.
