Negrito makes own name in PVL

By Manila Times - 5 days ago
KYLE Negrito has nothing to prove to her doubters anymore. Often compared to eight-time Best Setter Jia Morado-de Guzman, who is now playing in Japan, Negrito received unkind comments on her playmaking style from some volleyball fans. After the mishaps of her plays early in the PVL season, this time, she showed what she was capable of and carved her name as a setter. Negrito took the Best Setter Award in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational Conference and the Finals MVP plum. In the awarding ceremony, the Cool Smashers, who made a historic Grand Slam finish and earned their 10th overall title, were seen emotional as Negrito received the Finals MVP award. "Dedma," Negrito said while pointing at head coach Sherwin Meneses when asked how she overcame the cruel criticisms online. "First, MG [Michelle Gumabao] said that our focus is all of the conferences, and our goal is to be the champion. And that's true we finished and took the goal. Just like what coach Sherwin said, 'dedma.' I just held on to my teammates, and I returned the trust that they gave to me. I am happy with the result," Negrito said. The 27-year-old setter orchestrated 25 excellent sets to steer Creamline to its win in the 2024 Invitational Conference finals over Cignal. This is Negrito's second Best Setter award in three conferences. She tallied a total of 5.29 excellent sets per frame, 12 service aces, averaging 0.86 per set, and ranked eighth in the blocking department. With Morado-de Guzman leading the playmaking for Creamline for seven years, the Cool Smashers have not received a title in the Reinforced and Invitational Conferences. Morado-de Guzman left the Cool Smashers in 2023 since she took her talents with Japan club Denso Airy Bees. From then, Negrito had bigger shoes to fill and was often compared to Creamline's previous setter. Now, the former Far Eastern University playmaker slowly builds her own name and looks to orchestrate more plays to lead Creamline to more championships.
