Chua rules 9-Ball tournament in Shanghai
(UPDATE) FILIPINO cue artist Johann "Bad Koi" Chua dominated the 2024 Zen&Yuan8 Open Nine-Ball tournament in Shanghai, China. The former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist was crowned champion after defeating and dominating Taiwan's Wu Kun Lin in the finals via an impressive 13-1 outing. As a result of his victory, Chua took home the top prize of $12,000 (more than P600,000) and a champion's trophy. In a TikTok video uploaded by the Marboys Billiards Café, where he is a member of their billiards team, Chua said he hopes to keep going after this championship. "Sa mga sumusubaybay ng Marboys, hati-hati tayo dito, eto, nakuha na natin, finally ... sana tuloy-tuloy itong momentum na ito (To those following the Marboys, let's share this moments. We won it, finally. Let's keep this momentum going)," he said in a video message on Friday. Before meeting Wu, Chua also defeated Singapore's Aloysius Yapp 11-9 in a close semifinal match. Chua was congratulated by former world champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante on Saturday and newly crowned WPA Women World 9-Ball champion Rubilen Amit. "Grabe ka hindi mo na kami pinakaba ng finals haha (You didn't make us nervous in the finals haha)! she wrote to Chua on Saturday. Amit was fresh off winning the 2024 Massé WPA Women's World 9-Ball Championships last weekend and received a $50,000 prize for her victory. Chua and Amit will see action next in the 2024 China Open 9-Ball tournament in Shanghai.
