Hospital arrest for Quiboloy ruled out
SEN. Risa Hontiveros, on Saturday, expressed strong opposition to the camp of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KoJC) founder Apollo Quiboloy's request for hospital arrest in Davao City. "There should be no special treatment for him. His request for hospital arrest in Davao is very entitled and out of place. Why in Davao? Is it because he has an influential friend there?" said Hontiveros in a statement. "Quiboloy is facing serious crimes of human trafficking, rape, and child abuse. The accused should be treated equally, regardless of status or connections," argued the lawmaker, who heads the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, spearheading a congressional inquiry into the complaints against the KoJC leader. Hontiveros said Quiboloy had no right to choose where he wanted to be detained. "He is no longer inside the 'King Dome,' so don't pretend to be God," she said. On Friday, September 13, Quiboloy, through his lawyer, filed a motion before Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 159 to transfer him to a hospital in Davao City for detention due to unspecified illnesses. Quiboloy and four of his subordinates, Jackielyn Roy, Ingrid Canada, Cresente Canada and Sylvia Cemanes, pleaded not guilty at the Pasig RTC and to a child abuse charge before the Quezon City RTC. As per court order, the evangelist will remain in police custody while government doctors assess his medical condition. Quiboloy's four co-accused are to be transferred to a city jail in Metro Manila. Hontiveros had stated that Quiboloy must attend the next hearing of her committee. His alleged victims have confirmed their attendance, and Hontiveros believes Quiboloy should face them. The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Saturday morning that at least two of the individuals rescued from the KoJC compound, who were allegedly victims of sex slavery, were willing to testify against Quiboloy. The PNP did not provide the exact number of victims willing to come forward, but their spokesman mentioned that two victims were ready to issue sworn statements. However, others were said to be hesitant to testify because their parents were still inside the compound. It was revealed that alleged victims are as young as 12 years old. "At least two alleged victims are very willing to execute their statements. But others are scared because their parents are still inside the compound," PNP spokesman Col. Jean Fajardo said in a radio interview. The PNP also treats the situation delicately to protect the children's identities. Earlier, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the need for authorities to give priority to checking the situation of Quiboloy's alleged child victims in the KoJC compound in Davao City. "It is important now that the DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) have a joint search for these children so that we can make sure that they will be taken care of completely if they do not have parents," Gatchalian said in Filipino. Gatchalian suggested that the delay in Quiboloy's arrest was not primarily due to influential figures protecting him but rather because of his supporters' efforts to shield him. "And that's normal because he's a religious leader," the senator added.
