By Manila Times - 2 weeks ago
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) here on Thursday warned boat owners in Pangasinan not to sail to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) because of the rough seas spawned by the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Enteng. In an advisory issued at 10 a.m. on September 5, the PCG said that based on the government's weather bureau's gale warning, winds of up to 63 kilometers per hour will create a "very rough" sea condition in the western seaboard of Luzon, including the waters off the towns of Bolinao, Bani, Agno, Burgos, Dasol and Infanta. "In this regard all outrigger and wooden hull motor bancas transiting to above stated affected areas, except to take shelter, is hereby suspended," the PCG advisory said. Due to the nonstop rains since Monday, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) called on residents along rivers and mountains to be alert for possible flooding and landslides. The PDRRMO noted that major Pangasinan rivers have begun to rise due to the incessant rains. As of 11 a.m. on September 5, the Marusay River in Calasiao town had risen above its normal level and could submerge villages along its banks as it flows to the Lingayen Gulf through Dagupan City. The PDRRMO also said that the Bued-Cayanga River in San Fabian town is now above its normal level and could inundate low-lying villages in the town. Likewise, the PDRRMO said that the Balincaguing River in Mabini town in the western part of Pangasinan has begun to swell and could overflow anytime. Due to the heavy rains the PDRRMO said that five villages in the towns of Dasol Calasiao, and Binmaley experienced flooding up to two feet deep. The PDRRMO also reported that initially, a total of P8.014 million worth of palay, corn, high value crops and fishery were destroyed by the recent rains. In addition, some P486.000 worth of livestock was also lost and about P1 million worth of infrastructure was damaged.
