Woman killed in Cebu landslide

By Manila Times - 2 weeks ago
CEBU CITY — Hours after a landslide killed a 17-year-old girl, a riprap wall collapsed and claimed the life of a 26-year-old woman in the mountainous Barangay San Jose in Cebu City. The riprap wall collapse in Barangay San Jose happened at 11:46 a.m. on Sunday. The privately owned wall gave way after heavy rains from a low pressure area and the southwest monsoon saturated the structure. Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Harold Alcontin identified the victim as Claire Dosdos. The collapse buried Dosdos under rubble that also covered two shanties below the riprap, where two families lived. Four others were injured, namely, Anabelle Otero, 23; Ian Oano, 6; Eupime Oano, 4; and Area Otero, 6 months old. Emergency responders took all four to the hospital for treatment. Alcontin confirmed that the City Social Welfare and Services (CSWS) personnel began processing assistance for the affected families. He added that they would deploy drones to assess the full extent of the damage, emphasizing the importance of a thorough evaluation. Earlier that day, a landslide in Barangay Tisa killed 17-year-old Jemimah Ibuña. The collapse, which occurred around 3:45 a.m., buried Ibuña's home under rubble from a weakened riprap wall. Rescuers worked for four hours to recover Ibuña's body. The landslide also injured five people, who are receiving treatment at Cebu City Medical Center. Authorities evacuated displaced families from eight households to Tisa National High School. Acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia instructed the CSWS to expedite burial assistance and support the affected families. He also ordered a detailed assessment of similar structures to address potential risks. As severe weather persists, Garcia called for heightened vigilance and preparedness, especially in landslide-prone and flood-affected areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents to stay alert.
