SEN. Bong Go on Tuesday called for vigilance in the wake of destructive Tropical Storm Enteng, especially residents in flood-hit areas. "Let's not be complacent. Let's avoid wading through contaminated floodwaters because it causes danger, especially leptospirosis," Go said in Filipino. Citing the "significant" damage left by "Enteng," the senator urged the public to stay alert, saying that his primary concern is the safety and well-being of those in the storm's path, particularly residents of Metro Manila, nearby provinces, including Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region and parts of the Visayas. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go emphasized the importance of prioritizing health and safety during calamities. Earlier on Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed two fatalities and multiple injuries in Central Visayas. In response, Go emphasized the need for a comprehensive and proactive approach to flood control. He urged the government to be proactive and prioritize developing and implementing a flood control master plan to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters in the future. "We need to have a comprehensive plan for flood control. We can no longer wait for the next storm before taking action," he pointed out. Also, Go urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to efficiently use its budget, not waste even a single peso of public funds, and ensure the effectiveness of the government's flood control initiatives. In a past hearing with DPWH, Go, a Committee on Public Works member, asked the DPWH for their accomplishment report, given that multi-billion peso funds have been allocated for flood control since 2019. He also specifically asked for their prioritization strategy for identifying where flood control projects will be placed as part of their supposed master plan to address flooding, especially in flood-prone communities.
