CEBU CITY — A 17-year-old girl was killed early Sunday morning in a landslide at Sitio Gotchan Caduloy in Barangay Tisa this city.

The landslide caused a riprap wall to collapse into the girl's home at around 3:45 a.m. It was triggered by heavy rains on Saturday night due to a low pressure area and the southwest monsoon.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) chief Harold Alcontin reported that Jemimah, a senior high school student, was asleep when the wall collapsed and was buried under the rubble.

It took rescuers from the CDRRMO and the Bureau of Fire Protection four hours to recover her body at around 8 a.m.

The landslide also injured five other individuals, who are now receiving treatment at Cebu City Medical Center.

The landslide displaced families from eight households, prompting authorities to evacuate them to Tisa National High School.

Four of these homes were completely destroyed by the wall's collapse.

Acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia has instructed the City Social Welfare and Services office to expedite the processing of burial assistance for the victim. He also directed the immediate evacuation of the affected families and the delivery of the necessary aid.

Alcontin explained that the riprap wall, part of the Kinalumsan River riprap project in Barangay Buhisan, collapsed towards Barangay Tisa, where the victim's house was located.

The soil, saturated by accumulated debris and heavy rainfall, weakened the structure, leading to the collapse.

Tisa's barangay captain Ada Lapiña, who was in Manila for the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas national assembly, expressed her condolences to the victim's family.

The official announced plans to convene the barangay council upon her return to Cebu to declare a state of calamity in the area. Lapiña also added that they would investigate the liability of the property owner of the riprap wall.

Lapiña urged residents to remain vigilant as Cebu City remains under a red rainfall warning. She assured the public that the barangay's disaster team and the Fire Brigade are closely monitoring the situation.
