(UPDATE) COMPETING in his second and last event at the Paris Paralympics, Filipino tanker Ernie Gawilan looks to salvage a medal in the men's 400-m freestyle S7 event at the Paris La Defense Arena on Monday.
The 33-year-old Gawilan races against 10 other tankers at 3:30 p.m. (Manila time), needing to make the top eight to enter the final round.
Gawilan is at heat 2 alongside Cuban Yosjaniel Hernandez Velez, Ukranians Andrii Trusov and Yurii Shenhur, as well as Argentine Inaki Basiloff.
Heat 1 is composed of Aleksei Ganiuk of the Neutral Paralympic Athletes, Italian Federico Bicelli, American Evan Austin, and Chinese Huang Xianquan.
Should Gawilan make the cut, the three-time Paralympian would vie for that podium finish at 11:30 p.m.
Born with underdeveloped extremities, Gawilan opened his Paris campaign on Saturday in the 200-m individual medley SM7 heats.
The four-time Asian Para Games champ clocked 2:56.39 to finish 11th and last in the heats where only the top eight advanced to the medal round.
Meanwhile, taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin bowed out of medal contention on Saturday after losing to Abulfaz Abuzarli of Azerbaijan, 9-12, in the round of 16.
Ganapin, 26, got off to a promising start in the round of 32 where he defeated Hadi Hassanzada of the Refugee Paralympic Team, 22-13.
Ganapin joined archer Agustina Bantiloc in the list of Filipino para athletes who concluded their Paris stints.
Javelin thrower Cendy Asusano and swimmer Angel Otom have yet to compete in the Games.
Completing the 6-athlete Philippine team is wheelchair Jerrold Mangliwan who already competed in the men's 400-m T52 final but missed the podium.
Mangliwan still has one last shot to medal as he vies for a medal in the men's 100-m contest.
