PH stuns Ireland in Under-18 Women's Softball World Cup

By Manila Times - 3 months ago

The Philippine team stunned Ireland, 5-2, after losing an early lead in a 4-6 setback against Mexico on a Friday double-header for the young Blu Girls in the group stage of the WBSC Under-18 Women's Softball World Cup in Dallas, Texas.

In the morning game, the Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Philippine team posted a 1-0 lead after three innings and a 4-3 advantage after six innings against Mexico.

The Mexicans, however, tied the game in the seventh frame to force to extend the game and scored two more runs in the ninth to secure the win.

Despite the heart-breaking loss, the Blu Girls rebounded with a solid game against Ireland in the afternoon game.

The Philippines drew first blood by scoring a run at the top of the third but Ireland quickly tied the count in the same inning.

The Philippines then peppered the Irish defense with three runs in the fifth and another one in the sixth for a 5-1 lead.

Unlike in the Mexico game, the Philippines made sure the opposing team won't steal the win this time.

Althea Palzario delivered a complete game performance on the mound for the Philippines, striking out 10 batters and allowing just two runs over seven innings.

A pivotal moment came in the bottom of the third when Jiyah Caban turned a sharp line drive into an inning-ending double play, thwarting a potential big inning for Ireland.

Amateur Sostball Association of the Philippines president and Cebuana Lhuillier CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier praised the team's efforts in Dallas.

"I know these girls have the potential to go toe to toe against the best of the best, and they proved it again with their performance today," he said.

The Philippines improved to a 1-2 record in the standings and will next face Canada.

Meanwhile, the USA, who dominated their match against Australia 10-0, will be the last challenge for the Philippines in group stage on Saturday.
