ILOILO CITY — A police officer is now in police custody after allegedly shooting a man during a drinking session early Friday morning in Barangay Sta. Rita in Oton, Iloilo.
The suspect, identified as Pat. Mike Tagacay, was reportedly drinking with his friend, Mario Billones, when a heated argument ensued.
Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) director Col. Bayani Razalan said that initial investigations revealed that when Billones opened his clutch bag, Tagacay saw a hand gun inside.
Tagacay then drew his service firearm and shot Billones, Razalan said.
The firearm used by Tagacay was issued by the government.
The.45 caliber gun of Billones was recovered by authorities and is being checked for proper licensing.
Billones sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen and chest and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending physician.
Tagacay surrendered to the police shortly after the incident and handed over his government-issued side arm.
The Oton Municipal Police Station is currently investigating the case but the IPPO director confirmed that Tagacay may face both criminal and administrative charges for his actions.
Razalan, meanwhile, reminded all members of the police force not to carry firearms when off-duty and consuming alcoholic beverages.
