Boxer Aira Villegas settles for bronze in Paris

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina boxer Aira Villegas on Wednesday (Manila time) settled for the bronze medal following a semifinal defeat in the women's 50-kilogram division to Turkey's Buse Naz Cakiroglu.

Villegas lost to the third-seeded Cakiroglu via unanimous decision 5-0, despite a knockdown attempt against her Turkish foe in the second round.

All five judges, representing Ireland, Slovakia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Argentina gave the bout to the Turkish boxer, 30-27, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, 30-26.

Cakiroglu will next face off against China's Wu Yu, following her semifinal victory against Kazakhstan's Nazym Kyzaibay.

Villegas' bronze medal finish means that Nesthty Petecio is the country's last hope for gold in boxing, as she faces off against Julia Szeremeta of Poland in their women's 57 kg semifinal bout on Thursday (Manila time).
