MANILA, Philippines — Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial made a quick exit at the Paris Olympics as he suffered a unanimous decision upset loss against Uzbek Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's 80kg round of 16 at the North Paris Arena early Wednesday, July 31 (Manila time).
A Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, the 28-year-old Marcial got outpunched by the 20-year-old Khabibullaev who scored four 29-28 and one 30-27 in his Olympic debut.
The 5-foot-11 Marcial simply couldn't match the work and connection rate of the 6-foot-1 Uzbek, who maximized his height and length advantage to keep the former from charging.
Khabibullaev's speed also made it hard for Marcial to land his punches as he clearly took the first two rounds and wisely played good defense in the third and final round to take the win.
