Aira Villegas outguns Moroccan foe, advances to round of 16 in Paris

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina boxer Aira Villegas made an impressive Olympic debut as she outgunned Moroccan Yasmine Mouttaki for a unanimous decision win in the Paris Games women's 50kg round of 32 at the North Paris Arena early Monday, July 29 (Manila time).

Villegas, who turns 29 years old on August 1, earns the scores of 30-27 and four 29-28s from the five judges in the three-round bout.

First to see action in the Philippine 5-athlete boxing delegation, Villegas will face Algerian Roumaysa Boualam in the round of 16 on August 2 at 2:16 a.m.

Displaying foot speed and lateral movements, Villegas brought the fight to Mouttaki in the opening round and landed solid punches as she emerged the clear victor in the period.

The 27-year-old Moutaki responded in the second round as she redeemed herself with aggression and connection, setting up a wild finish in the third frame.
