Eala 'overwhelmed' with double title 'fairytale finish' in Spain tourney

By Manila Times - 2 months ago

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala just couldn't help but concede to an overwhelming emotion after capturing the doubles and singles championships at the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain.

Eala snared the doubles title with French Estelle Cascino as they outdueled the Bulgarian-Latvian duo of Lia Karatancheva and Diana Marcinkevica, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 late Saturday night, July 21 (Manila time).

Ranked 155th in the world, the 19-year-old Eala then fended off Andorran Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the singles final on Sunday evening.

"This win means the world to me, it even made me ugly cry. I am so proud because this represents the culmination of so much hard work," wrote Eala in an Instagram post.

"Securing my biggest titles yet in both singles and doubles is a fairytale finish, and I'm overwhelmed with emotion. This will always have a special place in my heart, and I leave here with a pocket full of great memories and the will to work harder."

This marked the first time that Eala won both the doubles and singles titles in one tournament.

Eala has now won two of her four double titles in the ITF circuit with Cascino as they topped the W75 Croissy-Beaubourg in France last March.

This Vitoria-Gasteiz singles championship is Eala's fifth in eight final appearances and first since she ruled the W25 Roehampton in August last year.

Eala started her singles golden run with a 6-4, 6-2 sweep of Dutch Lian Tran in the round of 32 followed by another 2-0 win against Spanish Lucia Cortez Llorca.

The Asian Games double bronze medalist then took down Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtsewa, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinal before outplaying Mexican Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez, 6-2, 6-1, in the semis.

In the final against the 18-year-old Kasinteva, Eala nearly blew a 5-1 first set lead and fended off her tough-fighting opposition in the second frame to finish the match in one hour and 34 minutes.

Eala thus seized her first $100,000 tournament in the process.
