MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said it was monitoring two tropical depressions on Saturday, both enhancing a southwest monsoon that would bring rain in parts of the country until next week.
In its early morning weather bulletin, the weather bureau said the center of the first storm, named "Butchoy," was 545 kilometers from Subic Bay, Zambales or 615 km west of Tanauan City, Batangas. It is moving west-northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour (kph) near the center, and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
Pagasa said while "Butchoy" was unlikely to affect the country over the next three days, it and another tropical depression named "Carina," was enhancing the southwest monsoon, resulting in gusty conditions in the Kalayaan Islands during the weekend, and in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Bataan.
Pagasa also said Butchoy would move west-northwestward on Saturday before moving north-northwestward on Sunday. Upon leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), Butchoy is expected to make landfall in Hainan, China on Monday.
Meanwhile, Carina is not expected to affect the country but will intensify into a typhoon on Tuesday, the weather bureau said.
It is presently 645 km east of Virac, Catanduanes, Pagasa said.
Pagasa said the southwest monsoon enhanced by Butchoy and Carina would bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Antique, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, and Bataan, while Mindanao, the rest of Visayas, and the rest of Mimaropa would experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Localized thunderstorms are expected to hit Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, which will also experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies.
