Phoenix taps McKinnis as Govenors' Cup import

By Manila Times - 5 months ago

MANILA, Philippines — Phoenix is tapping former Jackson State and Ole Miss standout Jayveous McKinnis as its import for the team's PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup campaign.

Listed at 6-7, McKinnis most recently played for Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus' Division A where he registered solid double-double averages of 15.6 points, 14.2 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 assists.

The do-it-all American is expected to provide the same inside presence and reliable scoring for the Fuel Masters, who surprised everyone in Season 48 after reaching the semifinals of the Commissioner's Cup.

Phoenix coach Jamike Jarin told the Manila Times that McKinnis "plays big, athletic and runs the floor well."

During McKinnis' four-year stint with Jackson State, he earned the distinction of being a solid defensive player after being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year three times.

The 24-year-old American is set to arrive next Tuesday, July 16.
