MANILA, Philippines — Megastar Sharon Cuneta expressed her grief at the passing of her friend, veteran actor and director Manny Castañeda.
In a heartfelt post on her official Instagram account, Cuneta wrote, "On one of the saddest days I have had to live through, I said 'Goodbye...' to another dear friend."
Cuneta reminisced about Castañeda's role in her career, noting that he was her first writer on "The Sharon Cuneta Show," (TSCS) which aired on IBC-13 in 1986. She also mentioned their collaboration on several movies and their enduring friendship.
"My 'Inay Manny' was my first writer for my show (TSCS) from IBC-13 in 1986 to many years after we moved to ABS-CBN in 1988. We also did movies together. More than having fun and working well with each other, we became friends. Inay Manny was one of those I could trust with my innermost feelings, as well as expect to be comforted by, often ending in fits of laughter. He was loving, kind, witty and smart. I will miss him terribly. There is a whole novel I could say about him, but this has been another unwelcome punch in the gut," she shared.
Cuneta concluded her tribute with gratitude for Castañeda's impact on her life and career, "So I will end it here, in this way: I love you, Inay. Thank you for touching my life, doing a great job with me on my show, inspiring me to be better not just at work but as a person. Thank you for your friendship. My deepest, sincerest condolences to those he loved and left behind. Hugs especially to his best friend, my Direk Joey Reyes.
Several colleagues from the entertainment industry, including Ogie Diaz, Carmi Martin, and Connie Sison, also expressed their sympathies.
According to veteran showbiz columnist Gorgy Rula, Castañeda was discovered lifeless in his apartment, three days after his passing.
His nephew Michael recounted that a tenant, attempting to pay rent, alerted the family after receiving no response from Castañeda. Michael immediately informed his parents, and upon checking, they discovered his body.
Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Chairman Jose "Joey" Javier Reyes confirmed his passing on July 1.
Reports indicate that Castañeda passed away due to congenital heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and hypertension.
Castañeda's wake will be held at Sanctuarium Crematory on Araneta Avenue, Quezon City, until July 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. His inurnment will take place on July 6.
