Eala beats Monnet for first win in Italy tourney

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala opened her campaign at the 2024 Veneto Open in Gaiba, Italy with a victory over France's Carole Monnet.

In the women's singles round of 32 on Tuesday, Eala beat Monnet in two sets, 6-3, 7-5, advancing to the tournament's round of 16.

This was Eala's first tournament after she dropped to 169th in the Women's Tennis Association rankings on June 10, after ranking a career best 157th. She remains in that rank as of June 17.

The 19-year-old is set to face Italy's Georgia Pidone on Wednesday in the round of 16.
