By Manila Times - 5 months ago

THE World Health Organization (WHO) said 1 in 6 individuals around the world ages 60 and above experiences some form of abuse annually.

The abuse of the elderly is a significant threat to the health and well-being of millions of older adults, WHO said.

In its Facebook post, WHO said some common signs of physical abuse are unexplained bruises, injuries and wounds.

Among the emotional signs are fear of a caregiver or family member and financial signs like unexplained loss of money.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Its observance was advocated by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and WHO in collaboration with the United Nations.

The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the abuse and neglect of older adults while fostering greater understanding and respect for this demographic.

This year, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs program on aging, in partnership with INPEA, is spotlighting the theme "Older Persons in Emergencies" to underscore the urgent need to protect and support older adults during crises.

WHO said the abuse of older adults carries significant consequences, often leading to depression and anxiety among its victims.

It calls on governments, international donors, organizations and communities to prioritize the safety and well-being of older persons in emergency preparedness and response strategies.
