Grospe resets high jump PH natl record

By Manila Times - 3 months ago

(UPDATE) FILIPINO high jumper Leonard Grospe reset his personal and national record by leaping 2.21 meters at the 2024 Thailand Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Claiming the silver medal, Grospe thus bested the previous Philippine best of 2.20 meters (m) that he himself established at the Philippine National Games last December.

The 22-year-old Grospe, a triple gold medalist for Mapua in NCAA Season 99, finished behind gold winner Taiwanese Ye Po-Ting (2.25 m) and ahead of bronze medalist Thai Chatchai Nil (2.07 m).

In other Philippine athletics news, Filipino American Lauren Hoffman claimed a bronze medal in the Edmonton Athletics Invitational in Canada women's 400-m hurdles.

Hoffman submitted a time of 56.10 seconds as she continued to fortify her Paris Olympics bid with the podium finish.

As of posting time, Hoffman is 34th in the women's 400-m hurdles rankings, and she needs to stay in top 40 until the last day qualification period on June 30.

True is the same for Hoffman's fellow Fil-Am and teammate Robyn Brown, who logged a season best 56.93 seconds to finish fifth at Edmonton.

Brown is 41st in the rankings but like Hoffman, she still has time to climb the rankings.

Hoffman and Brown either need to stay in top 40 or ace the Olympic entry standard time of 54.85 seconds to make it to Paris.
