Almost two centuries on and gin is still in

By Manila Times - 5 months ago

What do rapper and host Jayson Luzadas, aka Boss Toyo, actress Mikee Quinto and showbiz newcomer, lawyer Oliver Moeller have in common? They are all raving about the same cool, clear and versatile drink.

The three personalities are the newest batch of Ginebra San Miguel Inc. (GSMI), the maker of the world's largest selling gin, 'Gin-is-In' ambassadors.

Through the "Gin-is-In" campaign, GSMI aims to ignite a greater appreciation of gin's outstanding qualities that separate it from other liquor categories, as it is a drink that is 'Cool, Clear, and Versatile.'

Gin has a distinct aroma and taste profile, which can be attributed to juniper berries and select botanicals that give it a cool and refreshing vibe.

Gin's clear quality is ensured by the meticulous distillation process that delivers purity of essences. Gin is also a versatile drink that you can mix in many ways depending on the occasion on your choice.

Rapper and content creator Boss Toyo, known for his buy-and-sell business "Pinoy Pawnstar," boasts a collection of over 400 cool, unique, and valuable memorabilia previously owned by celebrities and personalities.

For Boss Toyo, Ginebra San Miguel's 190-year history as a brand makes it cool. A refreshing shot of gin helps him unwind after a busy day of deal-making. The crispness and botanical notes of gin is the perfect way to cap off his deals.

A new face in the showbiz industry, Cebu-based lawyer Oliver Moeller understands the importance of clear communication in sharing his legal, fitness, and sports advocacies as a public figure. Moeller appreciates the clear character of gin as a spirit that truly fosters connection and good times, as he enjoys it to drink with friends.

Much like a well-crafted gin, Mikee Quintos brings a range of talents that allow her to excel in the entertainment industry. As an actress, Quintos is game to portray and act out any role. What she loves about gin is the endless possibilities of cocktails out there. No matter the day or mood, there's a perfect gin cocktail that goes with it.

The official introduction of these three 'Gin-is-In' ambassadors were done at the GSMI's World Gin Day (WGD) celebration.

WGD is a yearly Celebration of Gin every second Saturday of June, now held in Europe, Australia and parts of the United States as well as in the Philippines.

GSMI led the first WGD celebration in the Asia-Pacific region in 2014. Since then, gin enthusiasts eagerly anticipate GSMI's annual festivities, which have become a staple for aficionados and curious newcomers alike. GSMI continues its WGD tradition with month-long activities highlighting June as Gin month, starting with a media launch at the Novotel Manila Araneta City.

"This year's World Gin Day holds a special significance for us as it coincides with the 190th anniversary of our flagship brand. To celebrate this milestone, we've crafted a one-of-a-kind World Gin Day experience, letting gin-enthusiasts step back in time and celebrate the rich history and craftsmanship of Ginebra San Miguel. After all, you do not get to 190 years without a milestone or a masterpiece," said GSMI Marketing Manager Ron Molina.

Aside from showcasing the art of cocktail mixing, the main highlight of the WGD event was a walk-through museum filled with Ginebra artifacts, commemorative items, art pieces, and collectibles and an edu-tainment (educational-entertainment) performance showing the three-part journey of Ginebra's 190 years of quality craftsmanship: 'OriGINs,' 'GINnovations,' and 'ImaGINations.'

In the first part, historian Alvin Campomanes brings the origin of Ginebra San Miguel to life with his creative narration of historical facts and trivia, while human statues portraying key figures in GSMI's history act out the scenes in the background.

The OriGINs chronicle the history of the Philippines' first-ever gin, which was born on March 10, 1834 at the Distileria Licorea de Ayala, a distillery located in Quiapo, Manila.

The GINnovations' chapter in the Art of Gin explores advancements and innovations in Philippine gin-making, illustrating how Ginebra San Miguel has been the epitome of excellence since 1834.

Today, under San Miguel Corporation's stewardship, Ginebra San Miguel Inc. has produced some of the most recognizable brands in the Philippine liquor market that cater to different segments and tastes.

Among its latest creation is the Archangel Reserve, in a limited-edition one-liter emerald green commemorative bottle, launched at the WGD event.

This limited-edition masterpiece is a 90-proof premium dry gin, made from a perfect balance of six select botanicals–juniper berry, angelica root, coriander seed, lemon peel, orange peel, and liquorice.

The ImaGINations chapter evolves into a modern variety show, exploring how Ginebra San Miguel has become part of the lives of the Filipino people.

To sustain "Gin-is-In" festivities, GSMI has lined up various activities in selected bars nationwide for all Saturdays of June, offering consumer promotions such as the GIN-IS IN VIP promo, a VIP card to get exclusive perks and privileges, and other promos and giveaways.
