By Manila Times - 3 months ago

The Philippine men's softball team stood its ground against the defending champion but fell short to Australia, 5-4, in Group A competition at the 18th WBSC Men's Softball World Cup at Estadio Mundialistas Hermosillenses in Mexico early Friday morning (Manila time).

Fortune and endgame breaks favored the Australians, who prevailed in a thrilling back-and-forth affair.

Australia took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Blu Boys responded with three runs in the third inning to take the lead.

Australia bounced back with three runs in the fifth inning, and despite a valiant effort from the Philippines, which included scoring another run in the sixth inning, the Australian defense held firm to secure the victory.

Both teams played well as evidenced by the zero errors recorded in the game.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed team, which bowed to Dominican Republic (5-2) in the first game, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the game against world No. 2 Australia but were not enough score a victory.

Shortstop Justine John delivered a crucial hit and drove in three runs, maintaining his impressive .429 batting average and 1.429 OPS.

Outfielder Francis also shone brightly, achieving a .500 batting average with two hits in three at-bats.

Third baseman Mark Joseph Quezon contributed significantly with a hit and an RBI, showcasing his ability to get on base and score.

Despite the loss, the game reflected the PH team's competitive spirit and ability to challenge the world's best.

"It was tough, but the boys showed great heart and determination," said Amateur Softball Association of the Philipp[ines (Asaphil) president Jean Henri Lhuillier. "This tournament is far from over for us. We're ready to bounce back and give it our all in the next games."

The Philippines will next face Mexico on Saturday.
