MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas settled for a 10th-place finish after losing in a four-set match against the formidable Thailand squad, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) 2024 Challenge Cup for Men at the Isa Sport City in Bahrain on Friday, June 7.
The national team clinched the same finish from its previous AVC run as Thailand took the ninth spot in the classification round.
Team captain Marck Espejo consistently led his squad after churning out 18 points, while Jade Disquitado added 14 markers.
After dropping the first set, Alas Pilipinas trailed close to Thailand late in the second frame with a 23-all card.
Kim Malabunga finds a hole in Thailand's defense, and Espejo slammed a powered crosscourt hit, 25-23, to equalize the set.
But Thailand banked on Khonhan Amornthep's 30-point outing to emerge victorious in the remaining frames, and only hand the Philippines a one-set win.
Alas Pilipinas were plagued by errors after committing 31 while Thailand only committed 22.
The national team finished its campaign with one win against the young Indonesian squad.
