ILOILO CITY – The local government and the police have destroyed 157 modified mufflers confiscated by authorities since a crackdown was ordered in April this year.

Of the total number, 119 were seized by the Iloilo City Traffic Management Unit (ICTMU), 31 by the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), and seven by the city's Public Safety and Transportation Management Office.

"This endeavor marks yet another significant moment in our ongoing efforts to uphold the rule of law, ensure public safety and promote a harmonious living environment for all our city residents and even for our visitors," said Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas during the ceremonial destruction on Friday, May 17.

Under the amended Anti-Modified Muffler Ordinance 2023-071, the sound level of a motor vehicle's exhaust must not exceed 99 decibels, with an exemption for motorcycles with engines over 400 cubic centimeters.

The ordinance also gives authorities the power to seize modified mufflers and impose fines ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 on violators.

"By taking decisive action against illegally modified mufflers, we are sending a clear message that we will not tolerate behavior that compromises the safety and comfort of our citizens. I urge the people to cooperate against these violations of traffic regulations," the mayor said.

It can be recalled that on April 3, the city mayor declared an intensified campaign against motorcycles with loud exhausts.

The city currently has 8 decibel sound level meters of which four is used by the ICTMU and the other four by the ICPO.

The city government is also considering providing additional units to all six city police stations.
