Ginebra, San Miguel gun for semis spots

By Manila Times - 7 months ago

SECOND seed Barangay Ginebra guns for a semifinal spot when it tangles with long-time rival Magnolia in the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup quarterfinals today, May 11, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Malate, Manila.

Game time is 6:15 p.m. with the Gin Kings, enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage, only needing to win once to advance in the final four.

Magnolia coach Chito Victolero is well aware of their back-against-the-wall situation.

"If we can extend the series, that's what we will try to do because this is a do-or-die for us. And we don't have any excuses and there's no time to relax," said Victolero, whose goal is to win today in order to force a rubber match that will be played on Wednesday if necessary.

Magnolia bowed to Ginebra, 87-77, in their only elimination round match up.

The Gin Kings will be playing without injured wingman Jamie Malonzo (calf) while Magnolia is parading a squad that is banged up as well.

Magnolia's Calvin Abueva and Jio Jalalon have been dealing with hip and knee issues, while veteran guard Mark Barroca played through an infected eye since last week.

Top seed San Miguel Beer will be gunning for a semifinal spot as well with a win over No. 8 ranked Terrafirma in their 3 p.m. match.

The Beermen finished the elims with a 10-1 record, their only blemish is a 95-92 loss to the Meralco Bolts in Batangas City last week.

On the other hand, the Dyip secured the eighth and last quarterfinal seat after beating the NorthPort Batang Pier, 104-96, in their knockout game last Wednesday.

"The last time we played San Miguel, it was a close game. We know the ball is round and the most important thing is our players are determined to play in the quarterfinals," said Terrafirma coach John Cardel, whose team is back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 Governors' Cup.

"We know we are passing through the eye of the needle but we will do everything we can against San Miguel."
