Ginebra's Jamie Malonzo to miss 6-8 weeks

By Manila Times - 6 months ago

Coach Tim Cone's worst fear became a reality on Wednesday as Barangay Ginebra's high-flying wingman Jamie Malonzo was diagnosed with a calf tear and is expected to be out for at least two months.

"Initial prognosis is calf tear, 6-8 weeks before he can return to the lineup," Cone told the Manila Times after results of Malonzo's MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan came out.

The 6-foot-6 Malonzo fell in a freak accident during the dying seconds of the Gin Kings' 95-88 come-from-behind triumph over NorthPort last Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The 27-year-old Ginebra forward remained on the floor for a while and had to be helped out by his teammates as he made his way to the team dugout.

Later, he was seen limping out of the team's quarters.

The Gin Kings have won back-to-back games to hike their record to 5-3 for solo fourth place in the team standings.

Malonzo's absence will be a big blow for Ginebra, which posted a mediocre 3-3 record during its first six games after missing ace playmaker Scottie Thompson due to a back injury.

The do-it-all guard averaged 7.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists to help Ginebra win its last two games against Blackwater and NorthPort and galvanize the team's top 4 chances in the playoffs.

Ginebra tries to make it three straight wins when it faces dangerous TNT in another titanic matchup this Friday at the Philsports Arena.
